On September 1, 1927, Lou Burroughs and Albert R. I'm not sure of the exact model driver horn for the mids, but they looked like this:Ĭlick to expand.Electro-Voice "Century" crystal microphone, model 915 The 15B, the vented voice coil helped with it's power handing: Everyone always wanted to get in on the listening sessions in that basement back then. Folks could hear these things a block or 2 away. How did they sound, well, I would not say they were the most accurate, but put on Montrose Rock Candy and the drums sounded just like a kit was in the basement, (we did have a big drum kit down there). The cabs were solid, I took 3 sheets of 3/4" MDF glued/screwed together for a total of 2 1/4" wall thickness, heavily braced with 2x4's they were really non resonant unlike the thin plywood Altec Voice of the Theater cabs. Final tuning was with dampening materials. I had a custom crossover with L pads for the mid/high designed/built by a local speaker manufacture who also helped me with getting the correct ducted port dimensions for smooth bass output. They used 2x15" EV 15B drivers in each box, an EV compression driver mounted to one of their medium sized midrange horns and their top of the line T350 horn tweeter. So.after pouring over JBL and EV's raw driver catalogs I decided on EV and hand built some massive all Electro-Voice based 5 1/5 foot tall tuned ducted ports cabs. Playing with tuning I still did not like their weak bass, I attributed it to their aged woofer design, it had very little excursion capability and sadly they easily burned out when pushed hard. they were ducted port rather than horn loaded/open port like the Voice were. I made a mock up cab with 2 Altec 15" drivers just to get an idea of the output I'd get. I figured 2x15" bass drivers would solve that. First thing that struck me was their weak bass. Early 1974, I was 16 years old, I had built a few sealed book shelf size speakers but now I was ready for theater size after hearing some Voice of the Theater's.
